Amateur Radio Newsletter For December 2017
December is always a busy month and if you have young kids and tons of things going on I hope you get time to go down in the shack and get some on air time. I know for me it’s been challenging with everything I have going on. This month I found some good reads on Millennial’s in ham radio, tons of opinions out there but these stories will keep the conversations going. I know keeping people engaged in the hobby is a challenge that we face with our local clubs especially.
The Discharge newsletter is up on the Arrowhead Amateur Radio Club website and can be found here. There is a lot of information on it from the Duluth and Superior area. The Stillwater, MN club also has their newsletter up and that can be found here.

Santa Net 2017
Every year on 3916, we give good little boys and girls a chance to talk to Santa Claus at the North Pole! It is indeed a magical experience to experience kids talking with Santa through the magic of Amateur Radio!
The Santa Net is on the air every night, November 24th through December 24th at 7:30 PM Central.
To participate in The Santa Net, just have your kids prepared to tell Santa their top 2-3 gift wishes.

Radio Amateuring Like It’s 1975
It was a tweet from an online friend in the world of amateur radio, featuring a transmitter design published in Sprat, the journal of the G-QRP club for British enthusiasts of low-power radio. The transmitter was very simple, but seriously flawed: keying the power supply line would cause it to exhibit key clicks and frequency instability. It would probably have been far better leaving the oscillator connected full-time and keying the supply to the amplifier, with of course a suitable key click filter. READ MORE

I just wanted to write this to start the conversation in order to disrupt amateur radio’s status quo, in response to K0NR’s blog, “Is The Internet Destroying Amateur Radio?” This was a great analysis by Bob, and it really paints a picture of the current state of the hobby, including the apparent distaste for internet-connected amateur radio technologies. We’ve known Sterling for a long time and this post comes as no surprise to us. He’s an ardent supporter of FaradayRF and even gave an impromptu lightning talk about our project at the 2017 TAPR/DCC.
